The Star on Top of Mill Mountain

A quick 30 minute drive from Smith Mountain Lake would take you to Mill Mountain. Mill Mountain overlooks the Roanoke Valley. The star shines over the city, giving Roanoke the name of "The Star City of the South."

  1. I imagine the star can be seen from a long ways away! Does it light up at night?

  2. Yes, it does. It has a morbid past. When I was a little girl, it normally burned white...when someone was killed in an auto accident it burned red for three days. During the bi-centennial celebration it was red, white, and blue. That's about the time that the three day red was let go! It was built in the 50's. As a child we always went there for picnics...fun memories!
